Description

Rankin Park Hospital, New Lambton Heights (Newcastle), NSW, at the time of its opening, June 12, 1947. Started as an emergency measure following the submarine raid scare of 1942, Rankin Park Hospital was completed in 1947 but health authorities lacked the staff to operate it. It was opened, with the help of the Red Cross, as a chest hospital for tuberculosis patients – many of them former prisoners of war. Few hospitals wanted to accept TB cases at the time. The local hospitals board didn’t like it being called a “chest hospital” and chose the name Rankin Park to honour its long-time member, A.A. Rankin. This photo shows one of the first patients arriving. Scanned from a negative in Greg and Sylvia Ray’s collection.
