It's disconcerting, but not really surprising, that very often as I sit down to write about some aspect of Hunter Valley history, I discover that Mike Scanlon has already been there and done that. Not surprising, because Mike has been working on Newcastle newspapers for more than 60 years with barely a break. Despite officially retiring 20 years ago, Mike keeps producing a weekly history column of remarkable verve and interest. Who gets to control the misinformation?

We are being told that Australia needs a law to minimise harmful effects of misinformation and disinformation. Maybe you think that sounds like a good idea. Trouble is, a lot of bad things happen because they seemed like a good idea at the time, and I have a feeling this proposed law could turn out to be one of them. No sooner had the momentous news broken that Wikileaks founder Julian Assange had struck a deal with the United States, pleading guilty to its trumped-up charges in return for freedom, than the toads in the old corporate media started croaking.
