We are being told that Australia needs a law to minimise harmful effects of misinformation and disinformation. Maybe you think that sounds like a good idea. Trouble is, a lot of bad things happen because they seemed like a good idea at the time, and I have a feeling this proposed law could turn out to be one of them. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) is the body that has proposed the law and that will administer it, if it is passed by the Government. “Ask him if it’s his birthday”, was the bizarre advice once proffered to me as a cadet reporter on a daily newspaper. The cadet counsellor – who lectured us once a week on different aspects of our job – was asking us to imagine attending an accident scene where an unfortunate man had become pinned beneath some kind of heavy machine. Our counsellor somehow pictured a scenario where this trapped person would be fine with answering questions from a cub reporter while simultaneously being rescued from his presumably life-threatening predicament. December 9, 2021 Opinion by Greg Ray The sight of those nonsensical black and yellow advertisements for mining magnate Clive Palmer's political spoiler organisation on the front page of my local newspaper is upsetting, I admit.
