Description
Three Sisters fountain, Katoomba, NSW, circa 1960s.
Scanned from a transparency by Ron Morrison, in Greg and Sylvia Ray’s collection.
The Three Sisters Fountain at the Scenic Skyway and Railway was built as a tourist attraction and also raised money to aid The Blue Mountains Handicapped Childrens’ Centre. It was floodlit at night and a 20c coin in the slot produced the spoken legend. The story below is taken from a tourist handout of the 1980s, based on a version current in the 1960s.The fountain was commissioned in 1966 and was the work of Sydney Scuptor Lyall Randolph (Williams) who also sculpted the mermaids on Ben Buckler at Bondi. The larger figures were 7 ft tall and weighed half a ton each. It was removed as part of the Scenic World redevelopment in 2004.
