John Simpson Kirkpatrick, perhaps the best-known Anzac of them all, had some ties to Newcastle. The subject of repeated calls for recognition with a posthumous Victoria Cross, the famous “man with the donkey” was a popular figure on Gallipoli because of the huge risks he ran in order to rescue wounded men.Like many other Anzacs, Kirkpatrick was British. Decorated engine, Australia Day 1915

It's satisfying when a fine old photo is reunited with its story. These beautiful glass plate negatives came to us in a collection a decade ago and, although it was clear they depicted a steam locomotive decorated for Great War fundraising, little else could be deduced. Lost honour roll found its way home

WHEN I saw the dismantled timber honour roll leaning against the wall at a garage sale in Newcastle, I knew I had to buy it.
